An apparel manufacturer ships to department stores from its 200,000 sq. ft. DC in the Midwest. With SKU growth and higher volumes, the operation was showing signs of stress in meeting business requirements. The operation had outgrown a rail system for garments on hangers (GOH), and the GOH system was hurting productivity and throughput more than helping. Distribution Design’s analysis led to recommendations for improving capacity enough to postpone an addition to the DC for at least several years. The recommendations for increasing throughput will enable the company to ship more units in peak periods with a 34% improvement in productivity.
